How we check every book

  1. Written for the book

Every question was written for our book. None is taken from a real test, so a practice test shows your child the question formats and does not predict a score.

  2. One right answer, proved

Every shape and number question was built from rules and solved by a separate computer check, which confirmed exactly one right answer. Each question was then read for wording and for fairness to a 7-year-old.

  3. Answered cold, explained in full

Before release, the whole book was answered cold from the printed pages. Every answer in the key comes with a plain explanation, so you can talk a hard puzzle through with your child.

Read how we check every workbook, with what each check found in the Grade 2 book.

Questions parents ask

What is the CogAT test?

The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) is a reasoning test that many schools use to help find children for gifted and talented programs. It has three parts, Verbal, Quantitative and Nonverbal, with three question types in each. At Level 8 the test has 156 questions. It is published by Riverside Insights.

What does the CogAT measure?

It measures verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning. Riverside's guide for teachers says these abilities help a child learn new tasks and solve problems. From kindergarten to 2nd grade no reading is needed: an adult reads every direction aloud, and every answer is a picture, a shape or a number.

Is the CogAT an IQ test?

Riverside Insights, the publisher, describes the CogAT as a test of reasoning abilities, and its guide for teachers does not call it an IQ test. Our books and our answer check never give an IQ, a percentile or a score.

What CogAT score counts as gifted?

Ask your school which scores its gifted program looks at, because we cannot answer that for every school. Our practice tests were written for our books, so they cannot predict a real score, and we do not try to.

How can my child prepare for the CogAT?

Do one short section at a time and read its worked example together first. When your child is ready, sit a full practice test, go over the explanations, and then use the free online answer check to see which question types need more work.

Which level is my child taking?

The level follows your child's grade when they sit the test. Kindergarten takes Level 5/6, 1st grade takes Level 7, and 2nd grade takes Level 8. Our Grade 2 book covers Level 8 only. Level 9, for 3rd grade, uses written words and equations, so the book does not fit it.
