What is inside the workbook
The book has two parts. The first is 10 short sections of practice, 114 questions in all. Each section opens with a worked example, so your child sees how the puzzle works before answering one alone. Paper Folding has two sections, Holes and Cuts, so the 10 sections cover all 9 question types.
The second part is the practice tests. Each full-length test has 156 questions, the same number as the real test, in the order of the real test. Each test comes with a bubble answer sheet that you can copy for a second try. The Kindle ebook has Test 1 only.
At the back, the answer key gives a plain explanation for every question. The directions are written to be read aloud, so your child does not need to read: at Level 8 every answer is a picture, a shape, or a number.
The 9 question types at Level 8
The CogAT has three parts at this level, with three question types in each. The workbook practices all nine.
| Part | Question types |
|---|---|
| Verbal | Picture Analogies, Sentence Completion, Picture Classification |
| Quantitative | Number Analogies, Number Puzzles, Number Series |
| Nonverbal | Figure Matrices, Paper Folding, Figure Classification |
On the real test, the three parts have 54 Verbal, 50 Quantitative, and 52 Nonverbal questions.
A question from the book
Here is Figure Matrices, question 1, as it is printed. In the top row, one grey arrow becomes four grey arrows. In the bottom row, one black circle becomes what? The choices are A, four black circles; B, four grey circles; and C, three black circles.
The answer is A. The key says: "Look at the top row: 1 shape becomes 4 shapes. Do the same to the bottom picture." Every answer in the key has a reason written like this one.
Below are two real pages from the finished book: the worked example that opens Figure Matrices, and a page of the answer key.
Is this the right CogAT level for 2nd grade?
Yes, if your child sits the CogAT in 2nd grade. The level follows the grade at the time of the test: Level 5/6 is for kindergarten, Level 7 for 1st grade, Level 8 for 2nd grade, and Level 9 for 3rd grade. Check with your school which level it will give.
This book covers Level 8 only. Level 9 uses written words and equations, so a Level 8 workbook does not fit a 3rd grader.
How to use the workbook with your child
Do one short section at a time, and read its worked example together first. Then go over the answers with the key.
When your child is ready, sit the first full practice test. Go over the explanations, then try the second test.
After a test, open the free answer check and tap the A, B or C your child chose. It marks every answer and lists the question types to practice next, with the book pages. Answers stay in your browser tab.
How the answers were checked
Every question was written for this book, and none is taken from a real test. Every shape and number question was built from rules and solved by a separate computer check, which confirmed exactly one right answer. The finished book was then answered cold from the printed pages, and 425 of 426 answers matched the key.
The full method, including where AI is used, is on the page how we check every workbook.
Questions parents ask about the Grade 2 workbook
Does my child need to read to use it?
No. At Level 8 an adult reads every direction aloud, and every answer choice is a picture, a shape, or a number.
Is this the real CogAT?
No. The CogAT is published by Riverside Insights. Our workbook is a separate practice book. It shows your child the question formats and does not predict a score, an IQ, or a percentile.
How many practice tests are there?
The paperback has two full-length practice tests of 156 questions each. The Kindle ebook has the first test only.
Where can I buy it?
The workbook is coming to Amazon, and this page will link to it when it is there. You can already use the free online answer check and read how we check every workbook.
Is there a book for another grade?
Not yet. More grades are on the way, and this page covers Grade 2 only.
